Reinstating a believable superhero physique

Daredevil Born Again – Charlie Cox as Daredevil
Charlie Cox’s ongoing commitment to his role as Hells Kitchen’s defender warrants commendation. 43 years into life, 11 years into character, preservation with grace continues. Disney + unveils Daredevil Born Again’s latest entry, employing Matt Murdock’s disciplined build.
Upon witnessing, potent discussion of realistic standards incites itself. While Cox’s toned presentation was a transformation of passion, not all scenarios end in a difficult yet realistic form.
Reviewing many modern action stars will reveal dangerous trends re-emerging from 1980’s filmic heroes. Chris Hemsworth or Alan Ritchson exampling a glaring issue. Substance use. Staring at the giant that has morphed into Jack Reacher, Ritchson’s rapid growth between his time filming Titans and Reacher is alarming at best. Revolving from one show to the next with less than biennial spacing, chemical enhancement becomes obvious. A reflection of this is felt by Christ Hemsworth in Love and Thunder, while not confirmed, it is evident that a significant and implausible shift in body mass occurred over his tenure as Marvel’s God of thunder.
As an actor and a filmmaker you have responsibility. Part of that responsibility is to ensure that certain lessons do or don’t radiate through your film accordingly. The dangers of Hollywood stars taking such extreme measures for physical presence doesn’t just lie in health of their own bodies, but within the bodies of mass audiences.
Tuning the clock back to reality:

Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man (2002)
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy launched in 2002 and defined Peter Parker’s character for generations of fans. While his time on the webs are fantastic, Peter’s athletic build a focal point of discussion. Despite being seen minimally in a shirtless state, Maguire dedicated himself to rigorous training to achieve the shot seen above.
An applicable build for audiences to be astonished by, not obsessive of perfection, but a precedent one could naturally achieve.

Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Taika Waititi’s second bout with Thor Odinson is a controversial film for numerous reasons. One thing audiences do agree on, is the over-exaggerated physique of Chris Hemsworth. Credit where credit is due, significant regimens were followed to sustain his appearance. However, when compared to previous entries, evidence suggests this is not the organic construction his journey started with.
Thus lies the issue. Notable portions of superhero audiences are young men and if the characters that they idolise appear to be unnatural in proportion, the question of why will not be asked, the question of how to replicate will be. Inclination to follow in suit without proper education may proceed, possibly causing permanent disfiguration or immobility.
Disproportionate comparison forms when constantly exposed to an impossible standard. Over-enhanced physiques can effect mental states of impressionable viewers just as dangerously as biologically.

Charlie Cox in Daredevil Born Again Season 2 (2026)
Re-correction presents itself as Charlie Cox’s intense workout and nutrient plan is based in realism. Prioritising protein exposure and consistent training reminiscent of boxers. Methodology varies based on circumstance, which is important to recall. Personal nutritionists and High class MMA fighters are not accessible to most. Despite that, Cox’s dedication reminds of a time when balanced discipline moulded superhero media. Extremities are often damaging, thus mindful progress of purposeful intent serves a greater effect than leaping for vanity.
This Allows for fans who idolise these characters direction to attain similar style, alongside familiar capabilities. Less extravagant bars will plague the minds of viewers. Less bio-engineering exposed. All in all, Cox reminds us that we need not transfuse the body in order to bring our favourite comic characters to life. Respecting the character allowed him to push further, while maintaining clean living.
He plants a step in a hopeful direction, one of reasonability, fairness and evolution.
