Marvel’s greatest hero returns to the big screen.

Less than 24 hours ago Spidey star Tom Holland announced a team up between his corporate friends and influencers across the globe to slowly unveil the trailer for the next web-swinging adventure. As the day concludes (or starts depending on nation), the full cut has officially been released. Sufficed to say, the vibe felt faithfully on point. It felt like Spider-Man, the way he is supposed to be. A man torn between his life and his responsibilities, yet gets up to find a way forward.
One thing is immediately evident. Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel has listened to the consistent criticisms of the previous trilogy and found solutions of the comic accurate variety, with an appropriate dose of movie magic. One of these primary criticisms was that he felt to much like an “Ironman Jr” or that he was over-reliant on technology and other MCU characters, dulling down his own abilities to allow for the story to give attention elsewhere whether it was plausible or not needed. No Way Home ended with Peter Parker very much alone, and that continues here. Though he will run into plenty of faces new and old.
The Sub-Title of the film is inspired by A era of comics following J. Michael Strateczynski’s ever infamous One More Day Storyline, from which Spidey’s world has never fully recovered. Brand New Day did come with an opportunity to breathe. While not utilised by every creator, many found a way to. Some of which concocted modern classics, or modern controversies. While Segments of this era will be adopted into the new film, many classic elements are on display as well.

Pictured above is Hollands Spidey battling against the Tarantula. A lesser known villain to most movie fans, he appeared for the first time in July 1974, but slowly faded back into obscurity in modern times. The actor behind the mask has not yet been confirmed, though in the comics the secret identity of the arachnid themed foe is Antonio “Anton” Miguel Rodriguez, the first to hold the mantle.

Another classic Spidey Villain who I am more fimilar with, and very eager to see debut on the big screen was featured in todays trailer. A goofy yet prideful crook joins the fray… BOOMERANG! (Not to be confused with “Captain Boomerang”, That’s DC).

Fred Myers up until a few years ago was an individual I knew nothing about nor had any interest in. Nick Spencer changed that. Starting a run that revitalised the Spider-Man world for many, there were some unique characters that he brought into the fray and gave them purpose. Boomerang was an unexpected one, but he had a significant role in Spencer’s tenure. In one of my favourite single issues of all time Amazing Spider-Man (VOLUME 5) #7, Pete is forced to team up with Fred in the Bar with no name a known super-villain only establishment. The reason he was there? They were roommates. Though this will not be his role in the film, seeing him on screen is a delight, partly due to broadening the mythos of casual and long-time Spidey fans alike.
It’s impossible not to mention it. The Spider-Man suit looks absolutely gorgeous. The design team’s work paid off, they achieved perfection. No notes.

Pictured Above: Scorpion – Mac Gargan (Michael Mando)
The legendary Michael Mando, known to many as Vaas in Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3, returns after being sent to prison way back in 2017’s Spider-Man Homecoming. Many moons have passed since then. Given the fact that he no longer has knowledge of Peters identity, this makes his quest for vengeance more of a challenge. In the trailer he doesn’t seem to be after Pete though, but rather interrupted from another task, presumably some form of smuggling.
A point of curiosity, is how the scorpion suit comes to be. The comic origin is that J. Jonah Jameson funded an experiment with the intention of creating a Spider-hunter. This caused Mac Gargan to be attached to the suit which unleashed a deadly criminal onto the city. This opened the door for major character development, for both Mac Gargan and Jonah. I don’t believe it will be from Jameson, But I do expect this origin line to be loosely followed, perhaps the funding will come from Roxxon, or even greater, Oscorp.

Pictured Above: The Punisher – Frank Castle, (Jon Bernthal)
After returning in the triumphant opening season of Daredevil Born Again, Jon Bernthal makes his first big screen MCU appearance. Sporting his classic skull logo, he and Peter have a run in that results in Frank Castle’s ride being crushed. They both have very different methods to handling crime, which creates a lot of tension, coupled with the fact that they are at very different stages of life. These two are not enemies, but they are not friends either. There is a lot of philosophical potential that could come out of these two men interacting. After all, The Punisher’s first appearance was in a Spider-Man comic, in February 1974. Introduced as more of an antagonist than the Anti-Hero he later evolved into.

Pictured Above: Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo)
Most unexpectedly, Bruce Banner is set to return in the latest MCU adventure. Last seen in She-Hulk, the last few presentations of his gamma powered alter-ego have been less than favourable. I yearn for the return of savage Hulk, the one that could do great good but had to be contained because of how dangerous he was. The one that was only unleashed if no other options presented themselves.
Rumour has it, that the days of Professor Hulk may be behind us. Whether there are any truth to these rumours, only time will tell upon the movies release. If this is the case, How will they explain it? It’s possible they will tap into the deep lore about Hulk’s many personalities, such as Joe Fixit, Doc Green, Titan, ETC. Given that a promotional 5-issue comic series is being released later in the year, which seemingly features savage Hulk, Marvel may have tipped there hand a tad early. Especially when considered that there is no need for the series, other than to ride the coat tails of hype that surround the movie.
One thing worth mentioning is that the Hulk (Not Banner) is one of the few people who remembers Peter’s identity post One More Day. While they have really had no interaction thus far in the MCU, it is interesting to note.

Pictured Above: MJ (Zendaya) and Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon)
MJ and Ned Leeds return in Hollands fourth crime fighting adventure. From a speculative standpoint, They will be mostly distanced this time. While yes, there is a moment where Spidey and MJ are close on a rooftop, I think these moments will come few and far between. The scenes they are in will certainly have significant influence on Peter, such as the college party he can be seen at, or offering flowers as a housewarming gift, debating whether or not to tell them the truth about the lives they once shared.
Fun-fact: Holland and Zendaya’s romance goes beyond the screen, for they two became apart of the Spider-Man dating club, following in suite from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield with their on-screen love interests. The pair have been engaged for some time now, with rumours circulation about when, or if a wedding has secretly already occurred.

Typically associated with Daredevil, the Hand are one of the secret groups of skilled assassins that roam through the world of Marvel. Once again, they’ve picked a fight in the wrong neighbourhood. We only see a brief glimpse of the shadowy group, which is a good thing, after all, we want to be surprised.
Within this scene we see Peter use one of his new upgrades after emerging from his cocoon earlier in the trailer, which gives him the benefit of organic webbing. It seems his Spidey senses have enhanced, possibly increasing his reflexes and agility as well. Peter has undergone physical transformation in the comics before, with the most well known coming from The Other storyline by J. Michael Straczynski over 20 years ago.

The Cocoon that Peter hatches from, Dangling under a NYC rooftop.
Likely taking place by the end of the first act, this moment will set up an path of growth that Peter has to overcome. These changes will distract him at first but the wall-crawler knows how to push through uncomfortable circumstance. I have no doubt though, it will be a messy process.

One mysterious figure locked away from the rest, who will this be? Tramell Tillman’s character mentions someone who is controlling the situation, nor can be seen. Personally this led me to speculate about Mr Negative, but this shot confirms otherwise. Certain fan theories imply that Sadie Sink’s unknown character is Jean Grey of the X-men. This seems unlikely. Introducing a mainline X-men in a Spider-Man movie is one thing, but setting her up to be part of the already stacked antagonist roster is excessive. Frankly, I think it is also safe to assume that she will not be playing Gwen Stacy either. Firestar, a mutant with flame powers is a more likely bet. Maybe even Charlie Cooper (a scientist and one of Peter’s romances) as a wild card guess.
Time will Tell. Only a few months left to go before launching into the world. It’s time to get excited. Revisiting Insomniacs Spider-Man games will be a good move, as there’s definitely some inspiration coming over, plus, who doesn’t love swinging through the streets of New York?

In the mean time, that comic I mentioned before? While not necessary to the wider Marvel lore, I imagine an entertaining read will be found. Helmed by the legendary Johnathan Hickmann, I believe he will give his best design to any project he takes up. Spider-Man: Long Way Home #1 Launches June 17th, 2026.
