“Conquering the ultimate enemy, is the conquering of oneself. If one can handle the challenge of themselves, then fear need not burden them, for they are the masters of destiny.” – Nick Roberts

Alan Wake 2 launched in 2023, boasting a wild narrative that irrefutably ended on a cliff-hanger. Whether it takes Remedy Entertainment another 13 years or 3 years for the sequel, big seeds have been planted, even if they won’t all be apart of the forest.

Many fan-theories exist about what could come next from the Remedy-Verse, or even what has already been disguised in plain sight. While seem of these are great and some flawed, I wanted to explore the depths of my own imagination, reflecting on certain clues and where I feel they will be presented in the next adventure of Bright Falls.

*Spoilers for Alan Wake 2 and Control*

1. Alice and The Dark Place

Pictured Above: Alice Wake (Christina Cole), Alan Wake 2, 2023, Remedy Entertainment, Epic Games

Alan’s goal in AW2 is to get out of the dark place whilst ensuring his wife is safe in the real world. Through her documentary, she shares her final photography work with the world, which is her apparent suicide, stepping over the ledge of a cliff and plummeting. Yet right at the very end of the game it is revealed that she ended up plunging herself back into the dark place in search of Alan. She had many encounters with Mr Scratch, and this haunted her relentlessly. The question becomes, How has the dark place reacted to her returning? These segments of the game are deeply enthralling, radiating an noir-analogue aesthetic that you never want to turn away from.

I believe it is possible they make an individual gameplay sequence of Alice, from her first encounter with Mr Scratch, the leap of faith and her finding her feet in the dark place. I don’t think it would be to lengthy, as it would serve as a efficient way to tell this part of the story without to much exposition. Alan could view this through a TV much like he views parts of his own story. Alice, much like certain elements of Saga’s role in AW2, can act as a vessel for recapping the series.

What could be explored also, is the fact that Alice had survive a traumatic encounter that no-one will believe. Any damage to her apartment from Mr Scratch will get boiled down from the outside world as an explosion of insanity. The only person who will understand is Barry Wheeler, assuming Alice pushes him to overcome the denial that has been imposed on him by his psychiatrist as per an email found in AW2.

2. The Power Of The Manuscript

Pictured Above: Saga Anderson (Melanie Liburd), Alan Wake 2, 2023, Remedy Entertainment, Epic Games

This is what I am most curious to see exposed. I don’t believe a direct answer will ever be given, and it shouldn’t be. Just how powerful is Alan Wake? A question progressively teased, touched on with a true answer hidden behind the typewriter. While Alan is searching for his wife, FBI agent Saga Anderson is looking to prevent the permeance of Alan’s story, as it involves a new reality where her daughter has died. Seemingly everyone in Bright falls thinks this is the case, with the only ones remembering the true reality being Saga, Tor and Odin, the old gods of Asgard.

The main game ends with Saga on the phone to her daughter to see if the world had gone back to the one they had been fighting for.

Saga’s unique profiling ability offers her a glimpse into the minds of others. With this it’s possible they can show Saga how to take her powers further, possible to view versions of the world that once existed, which could offer greater insight into how much influence Tom Zane and Alan Wake have had on reality. This would then offer a great Segway into the mysterious existence of Alex Casey, who shares a name and several experiences with the fictional character created by Alan in his most famous novel series.

While Alan states that “You can’t make something out of nothing, even in the dark place”, there is more to it than that. Alan follows the genre of his story, which warps the world around him to suit that genre. This self-imposed block is goes deeper than just a story tone. If Alan’s power could shift the local area based on a story tone, I believe his changes can reach deep into the world and either not yet fully realise it, has lost/blocked the memory of it, or ignores the possibility due the consequences that may come.

This is where it gets tricky. The threshold, which is the gateway between our world and the Dark Place, is located in cauldron lake. The FBC (Federal Bureau of Control) state that the manipulation is bound to Bright falls because of the threshold colliding with a parautilitarian – in this case, Alan Wake. A parautilitarian (This is a struggle to say fast) is someone who has supernatural abilities, naturally or obtained. This is tested on a smaller scale with the nursery rhyme experiments that Saga solves.

However, when Saga is faced with the manuscripts alterations to reality, she calls her husband David. He tells her to stop calling and reaffirms that Logan has passed. David is nowhere near bright falls, so this means that the reach of Wake’s manuscript has further jurisdiction that initially thought. Jesse Faden, the director of the FBC and protagonist of the first Control mentions a poem by Tom Zane, and acknowledges later that she tried to find out about the author, only to realise that he didn’t exist. This means that Jesse had an awareness of the way reality shifted, possibly due to her supernatural deity Polaris, or because bright falls artisans had bestowed it on to her through the power of their writing.

Dr Casper Darling of the FBC also shares the features of the writers, and meets Thomas Zane in the dark place. Not including Mr Scratch, that marks three variants of Alan that all exist within the same reality. Darling is the outlier here, as he is a scientist rather than an artist yet he is linked to the shape of the dark place all the same.

If Alan or his doppelgangers can effect individuals in such a way, then there are other elements of Control that he is responsible for, some of which the Board of the FBC may have been countering. The Board exist on there own plane, unmanipulated by Alan’s conjuring’s, so it’s possible that the Faden twins will be directed toward bright falls in the near future.

3. Quantum Break

Pictured Above: Jack Joyce (Shawn Ashmore), Quantum Break, 2016, Remedy Entertainment, Microsoft

Remedy’s 2016 reality and time bending action adventure game deserves to be properly married up within there current connected universe. Due to the deal made at the time, Microsoft published the title and maintained the IP rights. However, if Resonant find great success, then it may be possible for Remedy to buy it back. After all, the links they have are so significant, and they tread a tightrope to avoid infringement. Alan wake has several references in Quantum Break, and vice versa, though the latter is indirectly-direct. Tim Breaker, introduced in Alan Wake 2 is apart of the “Time Breaker” DLC, as Shawn Ashmore is being pursued by Mr Door. In the main game we see this happening for Tim as well, with the final draft version offering greater detail.

My theory is, Remedy will aspire to make the purchase, so that they don’t have to jump through so many hoops to set up a character of similar nature to Jack Joyce. But let’s say this doesn’t happen and we continue with Tim Breaker. Mr Door has an obsession with hunting his variants as exposed in Time Breaker. That is because much like Mr Door he has the ability of traversal along with reality manipulation. Tim will have to traverse the dark place and likely run into Alice Wake. Alice’s art combined with Tim’s abilities may allow them to find a threshold and contact the outside world or at the very least offer them assistance in survival.

4. Mr Door

Pictured Above: Mr Door (David Harewood), Alan Wake 2, 2023, Remedy Entertainment, Epic Games

First and foremost; David Harewood nailed this performance. The initial charm shaking away to reveal a mysterious and powerful presence that is not to be trifled with. Buried malevolence in a graceful form.

Warlin Door is a parautilitarian of significant power, though in the world of Mr Wake, who states that horror stories only have victims or monsters, he is neither. He is instead an adaptor, in envy of the power lying within Alan’s unawareness. If Mr Door is the way reality warps, then why does he participate with the talk show? The same reason he plays along as the host of Night Springs.

He has to play he part in the story, par for the course, at least until the writer becomes aware of his actions. I don’t believe he outclasses Alan in terms of power either. While he has the ability to traverse reality, and have some pull with it, as we can see through his abduction of Tim Breaker into the dark place, he does not have the ability to outright alter it in the way that Alan does.

During the penultimate confrontation between Door and Wake, he tells Alan that he has brought someone he cares deeply about into his story. Saga never knew her father, and she finds out that whoever he was disliked by her grandfather, Tor. An interesting detail is that while asking Tor about her father, he says the phrase, “Some doors are better left closed”. In some cases I would say this is coincidence, but when it comes to Remedy, no way. It is plausible that he could be her father, or maybe even her father-in-law, David (Saga’s husband) is not on screen, so there is no-one to compare to visually. The former is far more likely, which could imply that Saga is more powerful than previously anticipated.

Mr Door has been setup as a great antagonist for Remedy’s connected world. I am expecting some reference or involvement from him in Control Resonant, he could very well be someone that Dylan may contact in a place such as the Oceanview Motel/Hotel, as he has directly spoken about his presence before, meaning he has an awareness of him. There are many doors in both buildings, with various symbols on it, many that have not yet been unlocked. I think it is possible that everything occurring at the FBC with the hiss was a result of two men playing god. While he wouldn’t recall it, Alan may have concocted the hiss into existence, and Warlin acted as a conduit, opening the door to let them into the world.

Final Thoughts:

I never noticed it on the first playthrough, but the address of the Oceanview hotel is “3 Cord Street”. in control it takes 3 pulls of the lamp cord to take you to the motel of the same name. A pyramid has 3 sides. There is a pattern and Remedy is following the plan that only they know.

Whether any of my speculation is far fetched or close to the truth, I will still be eagerly awaiting the final chapter. This time, I’ll be there day one, (Maybe day 3, if I’m feeling whimsical).

Control Resonant launches sometime in 2026, Alan Wake 3 rumoured to be a couple years after that, and another game in concept stages that may very well be the culmination of the alterd world events Alan, Jesse and the rest of the gang have been apart of.
